Rio de Janeiro Do's and Dont's

Tours Gone Wild! Rio Do's and Dont's – Rio is like any other big city. Just use common sense and you will be fine. We are not baby sitters and all of our clients are adults. By following these simple guidelines, problems are avoided and A VACATION OF A LIFETIME is guaranteed.

DON'T: IF YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT, DON'T TAKE IT – Necklaces, rings, expensive watches, bracelets, etc. should not be worn during the day. You can wear some bling bling only if you are out with us. Check out our Rio de Janeiro Packing Guide.

DON'T: CARRY AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF CASH OR CREDIT CARDS - Although Rio de Janeiro tourist areas are safe, there is still some pick-pocketing. Take just enough cash as well as a Credit Card when you leave the hotel and also try to keep everything in your front pocket. Girls: Keep pursues close to your body. One thing to watch out for are the street kids. Although they look cute and innocent, they are some of Rio's most elusive pickpocketers. To get an idea of how much to spend in Rio de Janeiro, check out our Pricing Guide.

DON'T: TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION – You will be close to everything you need. Besides Copacabana Beach, you will want to chill at Ipanema or Leblon during the day (a taxi cab ride from Copacabana is between US$ 3 – 5). Taxis are a lot safer than buses and the subway and of course, more comfortable. MAKE SURE THE TAXI DRIVER TURNS THE METER ON.

DON'T: DO ANYTHING YOU WOULD NOT DO BACK HOME - Just because you are in a foreign country does not mean you can do whatever you want. Brazil has most of the same laws as the States. You will not be given any breaks if you are a tourist, so please keep that in mind. If you have any doubts about anything, ask a TGW staff member.

DON'T: TAKE STRANGERS YOU JUST MET BACK TO YOUR HOTEL ROOM - Rio is full of beautiful people and most of our single clients will hook up at the club. The easiest way to become a victim of theft or violence is to take someone you do not know back to your room. Our staff members have a great awareness of who is or who isn’t sketchy. So if you decide to leave with someone, let a staff member know and please take his/her advice wisely. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DRINK UNATTENDED AT THE BAR OR ACCEPT DRINKS FROM STRANGERS

DON'T: EAT THE STREET FOOD - You will find deliciously looking street food at the beach, on the boardwalks, and outside the club. No matter how hungry you are DO NOT EAT IT unless you feel you have a VERY strong stomach. Stick with the restaurants, hotel food, and local fast food joints.

DO: STAY IN THE SOUTH ZONE (Leme, Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon) – During the day, it is best that you stay within the south zone (look at map). All of the great beaches are located there as well as plenty of restaurants and places to shop. Barra de Tijuca is also a safe place in the West Zone, but it is a bit further from where you will be staying. Some of the best nightclubs are located in Barra, so you will be taken there at least one night of your stay. Anywhere around the mountains or hills should be avoided.

DO: PURCHASE THE OPTION OF A SAFETY DEPOSIT BOX - Tours Gone Wild has not had any problems with the hotels offered on our site, but to make sure you have no problems on your vacation, keep anything valuable (cash, credit cards, passport, etc.) inside your safety deposit box.

DO: WALK WITH A SENSE OF PURPOSE – Walk as if you know where you are going. Don't walk around with your camcorder or your state-of-the-art camera swinging from your limp hand, like a shopping bag. Wear shoulder straps. If you bring along expensive cameras or camcorders, consider an insurance plan.

DO: AVOID DARK ISOLATED AREAS – where you do not see a single soul at night, such as the Flamengo Park, or the Financial District. Also, avoid going to the beach in the middle of night by yourself. Although we will be with you each night of your stay, please do not wander off by yourself.

DO: INFORM TGW STAFF MEMBERS IF YOU LEAVE THE CLUB – We are there to make sure you have the time of your life. You are guaranteed to be at the hottest club that night, so do not leave the club to go anywhere else without letting a staff member know. If for some reason you decide to leave early, let your party guide know and he/she will help you close your tab as well as put you in a safe cab.

DO: LEARN SOME PORTUGUESE BEFORE YOUR TRIP - Although you can get by speaking Engish in Rio de Janeiro, your vacation will be more memorable if you know some Portuguese. A lot of the locals do not speak English and by knowing some key phrases and words, it will be much easier to hook up with Rio de Janeiro's beautiful singles. Check out our Portuguese Survival Guide and our Guide to Hooking Up in Brazil.

DO: PURCHASE THE OPTIONAL TRAVEL INSURANCE - You never know what will happen when you travel to a different country. Like the saying goes: it is better to be safe than sorry. We offer different types of insurance to suit your needs. Check out the Travel Insurance.
